How can you deal with negative emotions?

When life is good and everything is running smoothly you can feel totally in control, happy and content. However, the thing with life is that it has its ups and downs and sometimes we can become overwhelmed with negative emotions.

These negative emotions can take the form of anger, sadness, fear, hurt or guilt. If they get out of control, they can be extremely restrictive to your state of mind and negatively affect how you cope with day to day life.

It may be one or a number of difficult situations that triggers a negative emotion within you. These form a Gestalt (an organised whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts) and is a sequence of significant emotional events that are all linked together.

Imagine a necklace of diamonds with each diamond representing a significant emotional event in your life. Each time there is a new significant emotional event in your life, another diamond on the necklace is added. Some diamonds are big (these are the large emotional events) while some are smaller (the less significant events). Sometimes the diamonds are too heavy for the chain and they break, just as humans do when they have too many negative emotions overwhelming them.
